The twelve-week 480-hour course exceeds the requirements set by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board for all new police officers in the State of Illinois. This high quality, resident program utilizes reading assignments to prepare students for classes allowing us to optimize performance based "hands-on" instructional methods. Fully 80% of the instruction has students performing vital job skills instead of listening to endless lectures. Community policing values are integrated throughout the course with emphasis on the service functions that are so much a part of today's law enforcement mission. Reporting to agencies on student progress has been enhanced by video taping all scenario-based instructional activities. Individual student videos provide agency supervisors and field trainers the opportunity to view their officers during training. This enables better planning of the field training experience. Agencies receive these reports at the end of each four-week period. Discipline and structure prepare young recruits to meet the challenges of today's complex policing environment. A regimented physical training program provides challenges that prepare officers for the demands on the street. Officers are expected to be in either an Institute-prescribed uniform or their department uniform each day. We set high expectations, demand performance, and reward excellence. PTI's firearms and tactical training program is nationally recognized. The focus is on teaching officers to "diminish the potential for resistance." In cases where resistance occurs, they learn to rapidly overcome such resistance with minimal risk. Verbal Judo provides officers with the best communication skills training offered anywhere in the country. When Verbal Judo is dovetailed with the strategy and tactics program, the result is officers who are much less likely to have to resort to the use of force to resolve peacekeeping problems. These courses offer additional training beyond that provided in the 480-Hour Basic Curriculum. They are generally offered in the evening following regularly scheduled classes. The courses are: 16-hour
Police Spanish Course – this course will be delivered in
four 4-hour sessions. The cost for this course is $70.00 per student,
which covers cost of materials. 4-hour Taser Certification – this course is delivered by a Taser certified instructor. At the end of the training, officers will receive a certificate of training in the X26. Officers are required to take a 2-second shock from the Taser gun in order to receive certification. The cost for this training is $125 per student. 40 Hour Juvenile Specialist Certification – this computer-based training program is hosted by PTI but certified by the state training board and NEMRT (MTU #3). The cost of this training is $120 for the first student and $75 for every officer thereafter. This includes a CD which can be used by the department for refresher training. There are 6 annual examination dates hosted at PTI and may require an officer to return to PTI after graduation to take the exam. Other exam dates are regularly scheduled by NEMRT at its North Aurora office. After passing the exam, the officer will be a state certified Juvenile Officer. Departments will receive a separate bill from NEMRT for this course. Less than Full Access LEADS/IWIN Certification – these computer-based training programs are state-required for officers who have access to LEADS or the IWIN system. Departments must provide their officers with the individualized access codes. Departments who choose not to have their officers gain LTFA LEADS certification while at PTI must indicate this on the registration sheet that follows, otherwise, officers are required to attain LEADS certification before graduation. As these courses are posted on the web, there are no fees assessed to have officers complete these courses. Animal Related Crime - In cooperation with ASPCA and RICP, PTI offers an optional, two-hour session familiarizing officers with animal abuse, cock and dog fighting, and other animal related crime. PTI will provide certificate of completion for officers who participate. There are no fees assessed to have officers complete this course. NIMS - Compliance Certification (IS-100LE/IS-700) – these computer-based training programs are offered by FEMA and jurisdictions receiving federal emergency preparedness grants are required to have their personnel certified. No special user ID or passwords are needed and officers can complete this training using personal, department, or PTI computers. PTI will monitor your officer’s completion of these courses. There is no fee to access these training programs. Training fee is $120.00 for first time officers and $75.00 for each officer from the same department if the department uses the same CD. Course
