Arson Investigator

Academic Credit* | Registration | Reporting Instructions | Transcripts

The University of Illinois Police Training Institute, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM), Division of Personnel Standards and Education, are sponsoring an Arson Investigator certification course hosted by the Kankakee Fire Department.

Prerequisites for students are:

  • Must be an active, full-time employee of a local governmental fire department
  • Must be Firefighter II certified or by-passed
  • Be a graduate of Fire Investigations Modules 1 and 2 (Module 3 is STRONGLY recommended)
  • Submit a letter of approval from Fire Chief to attend the course and acknowledging that the attendee will be attending firearms training.

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for certification as an Arson Investigator by OSFM.

This course is for firefighters to become a state-certified arson investigator. Police agencies may certify a police officer as an arson investigator by attending appropriate courses through the Illinois Fire Service and then requesting certification by the OSFM.

Certification of an Arson Investigator does not automatically qualify one to carry a firearm. Firearm possession for Arson Investigators is based upon approval of the investigator’s fire or police chief or home rule ordinance. For questions regarding this issue, consult with your jurisdiction’s legal counsel.

This is not a recruit level program, but one based upon the adult learning principles of collaboration, self-directed study and critical thinking. Participation in all practice sessions is mandatory.

Some of the topics included:

  • Law
  • Crime Scene Processing
  • Review of Basic Photography Principles
