The Police Training Institute received a letter from the Norfolk Constabulary stating that they were withdrawing from the Exchange program. The 21-year program was a wonderful program for all of the individuals that participated from both sides of the program, and we are sorry to see it end. The Alumni Association is open to suggestions for another Exchange program.

PTI Director Search

John Bowman gave an update on the search for the new Director of the Police Training Institute. The search committee received 54 applicants and narrowed those down to 6. Mr. Bowman stated that he has been selected as one of the six fianlists. The next step is to narrow the applicants down to 2 or 3 who will be brought to the U of I for personal interviews.

Jim Gentry made motion to accept the Old Business. Lois Welling seconded the motion. The Old Business was approved.

New Business

IACP Golf Outing

Urbana Assistant Chief Tim Fitzpatrick provided information on the upcoming IACP Golf outing to be held at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana on May 17, 2002. Mr. Fitzpatrick requested the Alumni Association provide prizes for this event. Jim Hagearty donated $250.00 on behalf of the Alumni Association. The membership voted to match this donation that will be used for prizes in addition to contributing 128 PTI Sport Bottles and 128 PTI Totes. Mr. Fitzpatrick mentioned that they are also in need of volunteers for this event. Any members that are interested in volunteering their time or wishing to receive additional information on participating should contact the Assistant Chief at Urbana Police Department.

Combat Challenge

John Bowman gave an update on the Annual PTI Alumni Association Training and Combat Challenge. October 5 and 6, 2002, have been selected as the tentative dates for this event. These dates will not be finalized until the schedule for the Chicago Bears has been posted at the end of April. The Combat Challenge will consist of similar matches that were held last year and the Lewis System will be used for scoring. Once again, William Usilton will be Match Director with the assistance of Freda Heflin.

Election of Officers

On behalf of the nominating committee, Lois Welling stated that the Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary were nominated to serve for another term of office. Unfortunately, the President declined due to work restraints. Mr. Doug Haig expressed an interest in the President’s position and was interviewed and accepted by the nominating committee. The following names were put forth to the membership for election. Doug Haig, President; Tom Burke, Vice President; Melissa Miner, Treasurer; Freda Heflin, Secretary. Due to the small number of members in attendance, the membership voted with a show of hands. The above people were elected as the 2002 – 2004 slate of officers.

Al Clark made motion to accept the New Business. Tom Kilhoffer seconded the motion. The New Business was approved.

Special Presentation

John Bowman presented Lifetime member Jim Hagearty with a Certificate of Appreciation for his continued support and contributions to the Alumni Association and the Police Training Institute. Thank you, Jim!

Comments for the Good of the Order

Jim Gentry encouraged all members present to attend the PTI graduations stating that it was an impressive affair.

Jim Hagearty reminded the Association that we have a teaching partnership with Triton College that allows us to hold workshops there at no cost. Plans for an upcoming workshop were discussed, and information will be posted on the website and mailed to active members when details are finalized. Members are encouraged to contact PTI with topics of interest for a 6-hour workshop.

Newly elected president Doug Haig, thanked Vice President Tom Burke for stepping into the breach and fulfilling the duties of the President until this election. Thank you, Tom!
