Police Training Institute
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Police Training Institute is the state’s premier provider of law enforcement training and education. An act of the Illinois Legislature's 69th General Assembly in 1955, PTI was created "...for the purpose of training police officers in the State in the methods of maintaining police services at a level consistent with the needs of the community. After more than 50 years of continuous training, PTI has become one of the country’s largest and longest-serving police academies. Its delivery model is nationally recognized for its innovative approaches to applying adult learning principles in academy based training.
The highly-trained full time instructors are leaders in the field. Together they work to develop and integrate standardized curriculum, instruction and practical exercises to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel at various organizational levels. They consult with criminal justice professionals throughout the nation, participate regularly in academic forums, and are often asked to present at conferences or host colleagues from other academies. The resources of the University of Illinois, one of the nation’s top public universities, are available to the instructors, staff, and management of PTI.
In addition to offering the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board’s mandated basic law enforcement program, PTI also offers the ILETSB Basic Correctional Officer program and various certified in-service, advanced, and specialized programs.
